Awards for Excellence in Research

Each year the Mensa Education & Research Foundation gives awards for excellence in research on human intelligence. If you have published an appropriate paper in a peer-reviewed journal or presented it at a peer-reviewed conference within the past three years, please consider submitting it for consideration for an award.

Appropriate Submissions:

Papers may cover any aspect of intelligence or intellectual giftedness. Examples would include, but are not limited to, papers from the fields of education, psychology, sociology, neurology, physiology, biochemistry, or psychometrics. Submissions may include (1) reports of original research findings; (2) theoretical papers proposing new directions in research (including reviews of research that provide direction and focus to the field).

Do not submit (1) ordinary literature reviews that do not provide new direction and focus to the field; (2) book or textbook chapters; and (3) articles written for the lay public but not for the research community (the Foundation offers a separate award for articles in the last category, the Mensa Press Award.) Entries must have been first published in or accepted by (not just submitted to) a peer-reviewed journal, or presented at a peer-reviewed professional conference, within the past three years (January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2004).

Previous winning entries may not be resubmitted by a different author. There is a limit of 20,000 words (not including abstract, references and appendices).

Applicants may come from two categories: senior investigators and junior investigators. Senior investigators must have received their degrees more than five years ago and have since been active in their fields. Junior investigators must be 1) graduate students; 2) researchers who have earned their degrees within the past five years; or 3) those who have previously earned degrees in other fields and entered their present field within the past five years.

If originally published in another language, papers must be submitted in English translation.

How to Submit:

You may submit up to three papers on which you are the first author; there is no limit on the number of papers on which you may appear as second or subsequent author. Our checklist will help you apply.
