This year the Mensa Education & Research Foundation awarded 137 scholarships totaling $56,200. More than 80 local groups finished the scholarship program, and each of their local winners will receive a Karen Cooper or Diana Mossip Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $300.
The average age of this year's winner is 25. Ages of winners ranged from 16 to 61 at the time of application. Fifty-five winners are graduating from high school this year with the remainder already in college. Winners are working on various degree from associate to doctorate. Two of the doctorates are MD, and one a DO.
Winners come from 38 states and Puerto Rico ranging from Maine to California and from Alaska to Florida. California was the big winner with 19 awards. All 10 regions participated with Regions 3 getting 20 awards, the largest number. Having the highest percentage of groups participating, Region 3 received an additional $500 regional award.
There is no prohibition against students applying for scholarships every year that they qualify. Some of our winners this year also received non-renewable awards in previous competitions.
